New Mexico backroads: Socorro Cty Rd. 12 (sneak preview)

Worn out from too much backroad (and front road) driving today – just time to post these two pics from Cty. Rd 12, which picks up at Bernardo and I-25 and loops around the Ladron Mtns. to the Rio Salado at Riley (ghost town), ending up after 50-ish rugged driving miles in Magdalena.

Horse skull and cliffrose

This is  a lonely and seldom-traveled byway, unpaved and occasionally washboard-y, but — except for the occasionally challenging river crossing — passable by ordinary 2WD high-clearance vehicles.

Take water, drive carefully (and slowly), and let someone know where you’re going. Otherwise, you might find your bones bleaching beside those of the horse skull pictured here.
